Private Instruction in Night Photography Dates: as determined by individual curriculum
Curriculum The sessions are designed around the individual's needs, skills, and expectations, and can include elements as varied as: an overview of recently published "night work" as well as classic reference texts, and hard to find out-of-print monographs; several slide shows outlining the long history of Night Photography, focusing on famous practioners, as well as equally important, though lesser-known, pioneers of this exciting genre of photography, and a discussion of "Why you photograph at night?" In addition to the above areas of general interest in Night Photography, there is a lengthy discussion of technical considerations, and the student is encouraged to bring previous work done nocturnally for evaluation. Tim can also discuss in depth some of his finished work - to aid the student in his/her immediate 'foray' into the dark, with emphasis on the "mixed" lighting situations that one finds while working at night in urban areas, as well as tips to "mixing" your own varied light sources, and the in-camera "dodging" technique of controlling the overall contrast of a night scene on film, or with digital cameras. Example descriptions of some of our favorite locations: For the Presidio of San Francisco location, the emphasis is much the same, although at lower light levels. Beautiful vistas of San Francisco Bay looking North and the Golden Gate Bridge looking West. On location in the Marin Headlands, mostly
under the illumination of the Full Moon, the student will encounter still
longer exposures amid "full moon" conditions (schedule and weather
permitting) and continue working on their self-assigned projects (to at
least finish the roll of film in their cameras or fill their digital camera's
storage card!). The student will provide his/her own equipment - an equipment/ film list will be provided upon receipt of a $60 deposit. Tuition is $60/hour - due before start of each session, for number of hours agreed upon. Or, you can book ahead, at a savings: a block of (3) four-hour sessions is $600, and a block of (5) four-hour sessions is available for $1000 (for these savings blocks, a $120 deposit required one week prior to first session - rest of fees due before start of second session).
