Instructor: Tim Baskerville
Location: Rush Ranch in Solano County
Curriculum
This unique one-night workshop, photographing out under the Full
"Harvest" Moon, is being held at Rush Ranch, on the
Suisun Marsh, in Solano County. The Ranch normally closes to the public
at 6pm - well before the start of our nocturnal adventures - so, be sure
not to miss this exciting event! The evening will start with a docent-guided
tour (in daylight!) of the Ranch and the 3 hiking trails surrounding it
- the Marsh Trail, Suisun Hill Trail, and the South
Pasture trail. All three trails are approximately 2 miles each
in length, and only the Suisun Hill trail can be described as moderately
difficult - as it climbs to provide scenic vistas of the Marsh, Ranch,
and the adjacent hills. To the west of the Ranch, lies The Marsh Trail
- it leads down to a freshwater marsh and along the edge of an unaltered
salt marsh. The Suisun Hill trail, east of Grizzly
Road climbs into grasslands overlooking the Marsh and the the surrounding
hills and Vaca mountains. The South Pasture Trail is the third trail,
starting at the water tower on the Ranch, and is mostly level.
The Ranch itself provides a wealth of interesting subjects to photograph
at night - a number of old buildings (a corral, stable, barn), plenty
of old farm equipment (the "Bone Yard"), windmills, weathervanes,
a water tower, etc. - all excellent choices for various "Light Painting" techniques.
After our tour, we meet at the new Visitor Center for a brief introduction
to Night Photography, followed by plenty of detailed information about
the evening's "shoot." This segment of the evening's agenda
includes an overview of recently published "night work" which
should be of particular interest to participants re: the environment we
find ourselves in this night. In addition, there will be a discussion
of the long history of Night Photography (with a few classic reference
texts to refer to), focusing on famous practitioners, as well as equally
important, though lesser-known, pioneers of this exciting genre of photography,
as well as a discussion of "Why you photograph at night?" In
addition to these areas of general interest, there is also a discussion
of technical considerations, and students are encouraged to bring previous
work done nocturnally for evaluation.
Finally, several hours (or as late as participants want to stay out
photographing!) will be spent shooting this gentle, quiet landscape, rolling
hills, and overlooks in the areas around the Ranch.
Emphasis will be on evaluating existing lighting situations and exposing
accordingly. Supplemental lighting possibilities will be discussed and
demonstrated, with an emphasis on "Light Painting" techniques.
Slide, B&W, color negative films, and digital will be discussed and
compared. This is an intensive workshop limited to 15 participants, closely
supervised on location. Students provide their own equipment and should
be familiar with basic photographic techniques. An equipment list will be provided upon receipt of payment. Camping is available ("just
out behind the barn") for those who wish to photograph into the "wee
small hours of the night" - contact us at the number below.
Partial proceeds from this workshop will benefit
the outreach and education programs of the Rush Ranch Educational Council.
