In this, our 20th Anniversary year, we would like
to invite all interested artists to enter our 24th online Night Photography
Exhibition, "All along the Lee Shore
. . ." This competition is open to all Night Photographers
(NPrs), all photo media - and film cameras are OK, too! We ask only that
your final outcome would normally be a fine photographic print - b/w,
color, alternative, fuzzy focus, whatever - presenting mysterious, riveting
nocturnal imagery with a maritime theme.
"Drifting" listlessly on the idea of the lee shore? Have a look
at this Wiki page
for an explanation. Finding yourself "in the doldrums" regarding
what connections are to be made between an enticing lee shore, night photography,
and the concept of music as muse? First off, there's the obvous: images
of shorelines, the sea, bodies of water. the distant lights of home and
shelter across the water. There is also the nautical theme of maritime
endeavors, great and small. commercial and for pleasure. For inspiration,
we suggest you first go no farther than the David Crosby song "Lee
Shore" - from which the title of this show comes from (see a great
1970 performance here).
This song - a long time fave of ours - is a beautiful, quiet piece evoking
imagery of the sea, sailing, and the universality of all living things
- and for us, here at The Nocturnes, continues our study of music
as muse.
Have a look at the online exhibit area of The Nocturnes Web site, specifically
the immediate predecessor to this exhibit, The
Nocturnes 20/Ten
- http://www.thenocturnes.com/exhibits/2010.html
- or one of our other, more theme-driven offerings, Blue
Nocturne - http://www.thenocturnes.com/exhibits/blue.html
or Auto-Nocturne-
http://www.thenocturnes.com/exhibits/auto.html
for an idea of what we might be looking for. Also have a look at some
of the Gallery pages of The Nocturnes Web site, especially http://www.tompaiva.com
(featuring the maritime work of Nocturne Tom Paiva), and Mark Jaremko's
quiet seascapes: http://www.markjaremko.com
And, of course, we have some musical connections:
"Lee Shore" by David Crosby (lyrics here;
performance listed above)
“Wooden Ships" also by Crosby, with Paul Kantner, Steven Stills
"Farewell To Tarwathie" by Judy Collins
"The Humpback Whale" by Harry Robertson; sung by Richard Shindell
Almost any Jimmy Buffett song
"Southern Cross" by CSN
"Water Song" by Hot Tuna
"Sloop John B." by the Beach Boys
Gordon Lightfoot’s "The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald"
"Che Guevara T-Shirt" by Richard Shindell
"Critical Mass/Wind On The Water" by David Crosby and Graham
Nash
- feel free to Google away!
With all this in mind, let's see what we can come up with for "All
along the Lee Shore . . .", shall we? Again, much
like our California Nocturne and New York Nocturne shows,
maybe your images don't need to be so-o-o literal - perhaps it can refer
subliminally to the idea of the lee shore - something to think about,
no?
Entry Fee and Deadline
There is no limit to the number of pieces submitted per artist.
Entry Fee: $30 for up to 3 entries; each additional entry is $5. Postmarked
dates for entries are NOT acceptable for this competition - we will need
to RECEIVE your 'hard copy' of entry form and fee by July 30, 2011! Please
NOTE: Entries from outside the U.S. should be sent well in advance of
the July30 deadline, as international mail deliveries are often delayed
up to a week or two.
Exhibition Dates:
Exhibition runs from August 15 through September 30, 2010. Accepted work
will then reside in an ever-expanding archive of nocturnal imagery on
The Nocturnes Web site after the exhibition closes - available
to NPrs and those interested in Night Photography (NPy), worldwide.
What to send:
Send jpeg files at 72 dpi named appropriately for the Web: 8 letters-dot-3
letter extension (e.g.- niteshot.jpg) all lowercase letters. The size
should be no greater than 800 pixels in any one dimension. Square medium
format film images are optimal at 800x800 pixels; and scanned 35mm film
images should be approximately 800 pixels on the longest side.
If you send images via snail mail, use lots of protective cardboard for
shipping disk - we accept CDs of your images ONLY, sent via USPS. An even
better alternative is to send us the URL of images that are already on
a web page (a Flickr account, while not ideal, would work also), and we
can 'retrieve' those images; then you can easily FAX (or snail-mail) in
your entryform with payment information. As you might have gathered, we
are trying to avoid a flood of emails and haphazard, ineffective attachments
being sent to the site.
Awards:
Two (2) Awards will be awarded at the discretion of the Awards Juror (TBA)
- a Best of Show and an Honorable Mention; and the amount of prize money
awarded is dependent on the number of entries received and selected for
exhibition. The final jurying will be done from a preliminary selection
of works by members of The Nocturnes.
Sales:
Sales will be encouraged - No Commission taken for any of our online exhibits
- and direct links to artist sites or emails will be provided. Artwork
remains Copyright of the participating artists. Pages on the Web site
are Copyright, The Nocturnes, and Pacific Media Arts. The exhibit, Auto-Nocturne
is Copyright Pacific Media Arts and The Nocturnes Web site.
Please print all pages of the form below, fill them out (keeping a
